Long-period Surface Waves of Four Western United States Earthquakes Recorded by the Pasadena Strainmeter by Diane I. Doser and Hiroo Kanamori

چکیده

Long-period surface waves recorded on the north-south Pasadena strainmeter are used to determine the seismic moments and fault parameters of the 19 May 1940 Imperial Valley, California, the 16 December 1954 Dixie Valley and Fairview Peak, Nevada, and the 18 August 1959 Hebgen Lake, Montana, earthquakes. Synthetic strain seismograms are matched with the observed strainmeter seismograms. Source parameters from the strainmeter modeling are more consistent with source parameters estimated from geodetic and geologic information than parameters estimated from short-period (<15 sec) body wave data. Long-period surface wave moment estimates agree well with geodetic estimates of moment, but are 1.5 to 5 times greater than moments obtained from modeling of teleseismic body waves or geologic information. The Imperial Valley earthquake is best modeled as consisting of 5 point sources along a fault 87.5 km in length with a strike, rake, and dip of 326 ° , 180 ° , and 90 ° . The moment for the earthquake was 4.8 x 1019 N-m. The synthetic seismogram that best models the Fairview Peak and Dixie Valley earthquakes assumes that the Fairview Peak earthquake was twice the size of the Dixie Valley event. Moments of 5.9 to 13 x 1019 and 3 to 6.5 x 1019 N-m are obtained for these events. A moment of 1.5 × 1020 N-m is obtained for the Hebgen Lake earthquake. Love waves of this earthquake are best modeled by a fault striking 102 °, although surface faulting produced during the earthquake strikes 130 ° .

A Slow Seismic Event Recorded in Pasadena

A prominent long-period wave with a duration of 2000 sec or longer was recorded with a very-broadband system in Pasadena on June 18, 1988. This wave was not observed elsewhere, and i s considered of local origin. The acceleration amplitude is 2.5x10 -5 cm/sec 2 in the northwest direction, with the vertical component less than 10% of the horizontal. The horizontal acceleration can be interpreted...

Regional S-wave structure for southern California from the analysis of teleseismic Rayleigh waves

Teleseismic Rayleigh waves, Ms > 7.0, in the period range 14 to 28 s, are well recorded by the short-period Benioff array within southern California. Multiple arrivals that hinder the determination of local phase velocity curves are detected by narrow band-pass filtering. The records are then windowed on distinct, coherent peaks that move uniformly across the array. Four to seven stations are i...

Seismic Potential Associated with Subduction in the Northwestern United States by Thomas H. Heaton and Hiroo Kanamori

Despite good evidence of present-day convergence of the Juan de Fuca and North American plates, there has been remarkably little historical seismic activity along the shallow part of the Juan de Fuca subduction zone. Although we cannot completely rule out the possibility that the plate motion is being accommodated by aseismic creep, we find that the Juan de Fuca subduction zone shares many feat...

SOURCE MECHANISMS OF TWENTY-SIX LARGE, SHALLOW EARTHQUAKES (Ms~ 6.5) DURING 1980 FROM P-WAVE FIRST MOTION AND LONG-PERIOD RAYLEIGH WAVE DATA

Source mechanisms of 26 large shallow earthquakes are determined in terms of a double-couple point source with a correction for the nondirectional part of source finiteness by using P-wave first motions and long-period Rayleigh wave spectra recorded on WWSSN, IDA, and GDSN networks. The combined use of both data sets allows us to determine the double-couple mechanism uniquely in most cases. Con...
